Opening post

Fixtures:

Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe - King City - October 10

Canada v Zimbabwe - King City - October 11

Pakistan v Zimbabwe - King City - October 12

Zimbabwe squad: Prosper Utseya (c), Regis Chakabva (wk), Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer, Keith Dabengwa, Timycen Maruma, Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa, Taurai Muzarabani, Raymond Price, Tatenda Taibu (wk), Cephas Zhuwawo.

Weather: Friday (19°C | 5°C), Saturday (21°C | 9°C), Sunday (23°C | 10°C)

My predictions are that we will beat Canada quite convincingly, and not embarrass ourselves against Pakistan or Sri Lanka. We are capable of producing an upset (although it will be hard without our proven T20 performers Taylor and Sibanda) but if we do it will be the result of good bowling, as it was against Australia. With no Gary Brent we lose a good economic bowler, so we have to hope that Mupariwa will fill that gap and that Chigumbura will be the wicket taker he normally is.

I don't think this batting lineup is capable of more than 120 runs against decent opposition (but 140 with Taylor, 150 with Taylor and Sibanda), so that has to be the target for the bowlers to restrict the opposition to. Stuart Matsikenyeri must step up. He's been on the scene for what, 6 years now? He's done next to nothing in that time... I feel that his reputation has been carrying him for some time (ie. he made the 2003 World Cup squad with the likes of Andy & Grant Flower, Heath Streak etc, then he must be good) and he needs to start letting the bat do the talking.

Obviously Hamilton Masakadza is the key batsman, followed by Chamu Chibhabha who I think will do well batting at his preferred number three position again. Taibu has a lot hanging over his head, and while he is a good ODI and Test player, he has performed poorly in both the IPL and the T20 International's he's played. It would be nice to see him slaughter the opposition, perhaps score a century (against Canada, this is a real possibility for the entire top order - especially Masakadza) but as maehara said in another thread, it's pretty unlikely.

Now, my prediction for the Sri Lanka game: Taibu, Masakadza, Chibhabha, Matsikenyeri, Chakabva, Dabengwa, Chigumbura, Utseya, Price, Mupariwa, Mpofu

Marumisa made the ICC World Twenty20 squad but didn't play, I think this will be the case for Zhuwawo to an extent. Play Sri Lanka with the best possible team (and if we win, play the same team against Pakistan), but play Zhuwawo against Canada (probably in place of Dabengwa) and again against Pakistan for the experience if we lost the Sri Lanka game.

Great over by Mupariwa (wides aside). Batsmen can't play him.

We are lucky that Gary Brent had such a ready made replacement (again, wides aside 😂 )

Ray Price into the attack. :)

I have some photos which I will post later :) Is the stream not loading for you? link

Fantastic bowling by Price, beating the batsman consistently. He's getting some spin as well. Utseya not bad, a bit short though.

Whooooooooooooo Pricey!!!! Wicket!!!!

Now Price strikes!! Clean bowled, fantastic ball. Kulatunga out for 8, 2/64. This is obviously a spinners pitch, which justifies Maruma's selection I suppose - even though he hasn't bowled yet.

Required run rate has crept up to 6.8... credit must be given to Utseya here, he's obviously instructed Price to go through his overs quickly (as he has himself) so that this score sneaks up on SL.

RUN OUT! 3/71... Some nice bowling here.

And another wicket!! 4/71 says the TV, but the third umpire has been called. And replays show, yes, it's out.

Another run out, Zimbabwe is on a team hattrick. Jayawardene out now, and this match has become quite interesting.

2 WICKETS IN 2 BALLS. GO ZIM!

Yes yes another Ray Price signature wicket!!!!

RAY PRICE YOU BLOODY LEGEND! DILSHAN GONE!

And the commentators have now changed their tune. 5/77, this has turned into a fascinating battle.

30 from 25 needed for SL. Great spell Ray.

Sack Utseya.

He put on Dabengwa... yes DABENGWA. Not Maruma (who hasn't bowled!?!?!), not Chigumbura who has a wicket, not Mupariwa WHO HAS AN OVER LEFT.

Poor captaincy, everyone knows Dabengwa is a useless bowler. And guess what, first ball gets smashed for six. I suppose Mpofu will be brought back on now....

  Keith dabengwa don't do this to me!! Dude is expensive, he should slow his balls and be on target

Despite that shocking over, SL still need 18 from 18. It's not over yet... at least Mupariwa has been given the ball now. And Utseya still has an over left.

This has been a very good game, besides the two Mpofu overs and Dabengwa's over.

We need Maruma and Price for the last 2 overs
ZCF Hall of Famer
Price has bowled his 4, Mupariwa has bowled his 4.

Forgot about the bowling restrictions, only 17 overs so Utseya can only bowl 3.

Chigumbura should be given the ball now. 9 from 12 needed, they can do that without taking risks... only wickets can win the match for Zimbabwe now, and Chigumbura is our strike bowler.

Edit: Haha you have to wonder what is going through Utseya's mind, Dabengwa has been given another over.

WE HAVE OFFICIALLY LOST , but played well like champions, we could have won thanks to Utseya 's stupidity, Dabengwa and Mpofu's poor bowling

The day i meet Prosper Utseya, is the day i will beat the crap out of him. He has sunk me to an all time low.

As I posted in the "Ray Price should be our captain" thread, Utseya is obviously not suited to this. Not to single Utseya out though, the coach has to take some of the blame. Matsikenyeri opening, Mpofu taking the new ball... these are things that Chawaguta would have had a say in. Utseya has made some strange decisions before, but after seeing today's match I just don't think he's up to it.

I honestly believe that we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Sri Lanka didn't win the game, Zimbabwe lost it. The way Mupariwa and Price were bowling we had the game, we just had to maintain the momentum. Enter Keith Dabengwa

Alistair Campbell made me laugh though; when the Sri Lankans disappeared before the presentations, and Mendis and Jayawardene were nowhere to be seen to collect their awards, he said "Maybe the Sri Lankans have decided they need a bit more practise" 😂 😂

i have just seen the scorecard this morning and looks like ZIm are not the far off becoming a leading 20'20 nation. When you think about it, All they needed today was one of these batsman in the side Sinbanda/Williams/Taylor. Price looks like his one of the best spinners in the world, with the way he bowled today. the only problem with Zim is they need one more key bowler and use the bowlers they have now a bit wiser. anyway an alrite performance but should be doing better.

And was anyone able to watch the match
good performance today by zim they just needed another batter to make 20 or more and the match would of been a lot more intersting. it was very clear the utseya didnt captain well and hopefully he will do alot better in the next match or question have to be ask is he the right choice for captain. it didnt look like taibu batting form was going to drop about the controversity over his head well batted and masckadza is a batter in the last year or so has improve by a mile and price is a excellant bowler lucky he decided to come back to zim :)
